When: 12pm Monday 28th April 2025
(Seminar Room 105-012) 22 Princes St, The Clock Tower, University of Auckland and online.
First Presentation: The winning student team of the 2024 CAD Solidworks all day UAC-DS Hackathon who developed a unique UAV solution to Earthquake emergency response. As members of the UoA Aeronautics Club, the team combined engineering principles with real-world problem-solving to deliver a practical and impactful aerospace solution.
Subject: Multi-role lifting body cargo aircraft design concept, by Andre Williams, Duy Le & Qiuyang Zheng.
Synopsis: Andre and Zheng will be presenting a lifting-body STOL cargo aircraft design that secured 1st place at the 2024 Dassault Systèmes Hackathon, originally designed as a specialized aircraft for disaster relief missions. This concept has been further refined and developed into a commercially competitive multi-role airframe concept suitable for air transport & commercial transport operations (ATO & CTOs) that can be easily adapted to answer the call of disaster relief missions for which it was originally designed.
About the Speakers:
Both are 3rd year Mechanical Engineering students at the University of Auckland with a passion for aviation history, aeronautics and especially aircraft design.
Qiuyang Zheng is a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) holder and flight instructor.
Andre Williams is a student pilot currently working toward his Private Pilot Licence (PPL).
Second Presentation ( if time permits):
A documentary on prodigious visionary aircraft designer, fabricator and pilot who championed building solar powered aircraft with RC models and single seat microlight aircraft, the Musculair 1 & 2 HPAs, entering and winning the German Birdman competition (at Ulm), then building a semi-rigid wing hang glider (Flair).
