New Zealand Aeronautical Trust
In 1952, the Auckland Branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society formed the Walsh Memorial Air Pageant Organisation to honour Leo and Vivian Walsh, pioneers of New Zealand aviation, and ensure their contributions were memorialised. The organisation aimed to establish annual scholarships in their names, focusing on flying and engineering, rather than a physical monument remembering the brothers active involvement in the practical aspects of aviation. The Walsh sisters, who had helped run their brothers’ Flying School, supported this initiative.
The organisation raised funds through air pageants, including events at Whenuapai, Wellington, and Auckland Airports, as well as the Aviation Showcase in Hamilton. These funds were dedicated to scholarships and charitable purposes related to aviation. Key figures in the organisation included Doug Patterson, who played a crucial role in its success for nearly 30 years.
In 1956, New Zealand Aeronautical Trusts Ltd was established as a trustee company to manage the funds from these events. The Trust became responsible for administering these funds and ensuring they adhered to specific charitable purposes. The company operates independently of the Royal Aeronautical Society’s Divisional Council, but continues to manage funds for aviation-related scholarships and awards, ensuring the legacy of the Walsh brothers endures in New Zealand’s civil aviation history.
Through the ongoing efforts of the New Zealand Aeronautical Trusts Ltd, the memory of Leo and Vivian Walsh continues to inspire and support the development of aviation in New Zealand, ensuring that their contributions are never forgotten.
